Movie Reviews

I love movies so this is hard, but I’ve narrowed it down to three greats: Star Wars (the original three), Lord of the Rings the Two Towers, and Amadeus. But I guess I’ll just stick with Star Wars for the sake of time. I love these movies because they’re just AWESOME. They are full of action, adventure, high-tech weapons and gadgets, villans you love to hate, and of course romance. I was raised on the original trilogy. Even early on I could quote just about any given scene with the slightest provocation. For Christmas, I didn’t want Barbie’s or dolls, I wanted lightsabers and and spaceships. George Lucas, Frank Oz, Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones, and Carrie Fisher were on my top ten list of people I wanted to meet in third grade. One of the impressive qualities about these movies is that they are able to reach so many people. They have something for everyone. As Phil Villarreal of the Arizona daily Star said, “Lucas’ trilogy earned its place in eternity not for its mechanical precision, but for its intangible qualities of inspiration and wonder.” http://www.azstarnet.com/sn/ent_index/54665.php

One of my personal favorites that isn’t necessarily a “great” has got to be Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This movie is packed with wit, humor, and social references. The style of the movie alone is funny and crazy. The Holy Grail will keep you laughing and asking questions like, “What’s the difference between an African and a European Swallow?” and ”Did that rabbit just kill five people?” Emily Blunt of the Blut review said, ”Perhaps the most original comedy – or at least the most ridiculously funny historically semi-accurate comedy spoof – of all time…” And boy is she right! http://www.bluntreview.com/reviews/grail.html

The Hype Is Right

This NEWSWEEK article discusses the changes a new product from Apple could bring. The article compares our internet and the way we use it to televisions in the 1950′s. We have this great and powerful technology but have yet to allow it to reach its full potential. Well the time for change is coming. This new technology will allow us to stay connected to the internet all the time. It will combine old ways of communication and in the process will create a new one. This transformation will be a great teaching tool if schools systems can raise the funds to put it to use in the classroom. The proposed touch screen would give students a hands-on feel to everything they do. Videos to accompany text would entertain students and keep them focused on the subject matter presented in the text. The combination of Videos, pictures, and text would keep students interested in what they were learning. I believe more students would hunger for knowledge if it were presented in a new and high-tech way. The novelty alone would make learning fun and enjoyable for many. The new technology would completely change the way we receive our information and communicate with one another. The technology also promises zero lag time, an incredible feat that would allow students to interact with say a Japanese teacher living in Japan. such first-hand experience would completely revolutionize education. This new technology will change the world, the same way television, radio, and internet changed it before.

More School?

I think that the amount of hours we spend in school now is fine. A longer school year would take away time for social lives, vacation, and experience outside of school. Summer provides a much needed break from all of the work and stress. However I do believe there should be programs available for those who need extra help over the summer to stay caught up or just a safe place to go.

A longer school day wouldn’t be so bad but kids still need time to do their homework. With a longer school day would come more homework and less time to do it in. Test scores aren’t everything. We focus way to much on finding new ways to improve scores. What about students’ emotional and mental capacity? School is a stressful experience for a lot of kids and they need a break from it.

Goals for This Week

This week I would like to remind two of my teachers about the information I need. I would also like to gain access to the site so that we can begin editting the organizations page.

Response to Justice Cunningham

I agree with Mr. Cunningham. Some people do not have a mind that can comprehend difficult math, or retain what they read. Schools get so caught up in test scores, GPAs and statistics that they do not look at the big picture. Not every family can provide for their student to go to college and not all kids are driven enough to go the extra miles to get a full ride into college. I think that Danville High School should have their own vocational system instead of sending kids to Garrad. This would allow people to take classes that fit into their schedule. School boards need to start looking at what education will do for kids in the future. You don’t have to go to college to live a happy, prosperous life.

Daily Work

9-3   sent e-mails to 3 of 4 teachers requesting help for website

9-9   We sent e-mails to sponsors of clubs. All of my staff members have been about their websites. I have received 2 responses.

9-10   We replied to the 3 e-mails we received in regards to the organizations and clubs. We also updated the marquee. The work load is reasonable and should keep us fairly busy.

Two Websites to Consider

http://www.dormanhigh.org/organizations.asp

This is a link to Dorman High School in South Carolina. I chose this site because its color scheme/design is constistent throught. It also has updated lists of sports and clubs/organizations. It also has a faculty directory with links to their websites.

http://www.dupontmanual.com/

The link above is for the duPont Manual High School website. It is very organized and easy to navigate. Though it lacks a a few features I would like to see on our site, it is well designed and easy to use.

Response to SALON.com

I thought that the author’s take on the average American teenager’s relationship was refreshing considering most teachers and parents don’t see the good side to it. Most adults I know criticize my sister and me for how much time we spend on sites like YouTube and Facebook when both of them provide a way for us to stay in touch with the world and communicate with our peers. A lot of teenagers want to tell people about themselves and want people to know who they are but are too shy to say anything directly to others or too worried about what other people think about them. The internet provides a place where we can talk about what we think without our parents overhearing and without having to worry about looking for a visible response to what we say. The internet provides people a place where they can express their ideas and opinions freely and gives others a unique insight into their personality. Other sites such as Diviant Art give contemporary or amateur artists a place to post their work for others to see and draw inspiration from one another.
